Concept
Inner Animals in the Inner City

“One individual person’s inner world shown on the outside, the hidden you, animal.” METAMORPHIC SPIRIT attempts to show the inner, hidden world of city dwellers whose "animal" apparitions were then be shown on the multimedia screen on the GASOMETER building. Yuka Oyama and New York based Chinese-American artist, Becky Yee collaborated on "Metamorphic Spirit”.

Based on one-hour individual interviews, Oyama created animal masks for 31 Berliners ranging in age from 6-84 and asked questions related to "Which animal is hidden inside of you?" Yee then photographed individual participants with their mask and had them re-enact essential movements that characterize each "animal". The digital stills were then processed into a 10- second video clip per animal.
